Frequently Asked

Questions about the experience.

It is far simpler than most people expect. You sit comfortably in front of our specialist macro camera, look towards the lens, and we take a series of close-up photographs of your eye. The whole capture takes just three to five minutes for one person. There is no need to hold still for long, no bright flash in your face, and no medical equipment of any kind — it is simply a photograph.

No. Nothing comes into contact with your eye at any point. The camera sits a short distance away and photographs your iris from afar using a specialist lens. There is no probe, no drops, and no physical contact whatsoever. It is the same as having your portrait taken, only much closer.

Yes. We use ordinary photographic lighting, similar to any portrait studio, which is completely safe for your eyes. There are no lasers and no medical procedures involved. If you wear contact lenses you can keep them in, and if you have any concerns about your eye health you should speak to an optician — iris photography is an art form, not a medical examination.

The photography itself takes just three to five minutes per person. Allow a little extra time during your visit to talk through your print and finishing options once we have captured your iris. You are never rushed.

Your iris is carefully hand-finished into a high-resolution piece of artwork. You can keep it as a digital file, or have it produced as a vivid acrylic print or a finished framed piece, ready to hang. The full range of packages and prices is listed on our website.

Yes, and it is one of our most popular choices. We can bring together the irises of a couple, siblings, a whole family, or parent and child into a single composition. It makes a striking and deeply personal piece — no two eyes in the world are alike, so the artwork belongs to those people and no one else.

Yes, from around four or five years old. The most important thing is that they can look towards the camera without squinting for a few moments. The session is quick and gentle, which suits younger children well. Family compositions that include a child's iris alongside a parent's make especially meaningful keepsakes.

No. Iris photography is purely an art form — we capture the colour and texture of your eye to create a beautiful piece of artwork. It is not iridology and it is not a medical or diagnostic test of any kind. For anything to do with your eye health, please see a qualified optician.

Yes, sessions are by appointment so we can give you our full attention. We photograph Tuesday to Saturday at our Royal Star Arcade studio in Maidstone. You can book online, or message us on WhatsApp at 07445 250359 with any questions.

There is very little to do. It helps to arrive with bright, well-rested eyes rather than tired or very dry ones, and to be able to look towards the camera comfortably without squinting. Beyond that, nothing to prepare — every iris is unique and photographs differently, which is exactly what makes the final artwork yours alone.
